What’s it like watching a historic golf round up close?

In addition to being a best-selling author and longtime anchor on Fox News, Bret Baier is also quite the stick.

The 53-year-old is a former collegiate golfer and boasts a 2.7 handicap index. Baier was among the celebrity participants at the recent American Century Championship, though he had to withdraw after the second round.

But Baier counts himself as a fan of the pro game, too. And as a frequent pro-am participant, he’s had the opportunity to play alongside some of the golf world’s biggest names. On this week’s episode of Subpar, Baier told hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz what it was like to watch Jessica Korda shoot a round of 60 at the 2021 Diamond Resorts Tournament of Champions.

“We played with Jessica Korda when she shot, 59 – no, 60 – in Orlando. It was me and Larry Fitzgerald,” he said. “And by the time we got to 16, we were doing the math in our head. Like, we have to just shut up and move to the side because this is happening.”
Korda became only the fifth LPGA Tour player in history to shoot 60 – that’s 11 under par – in competition.

“Seeing good golf on the inside of the ropes is really the coolest thing,” Baier continued.

He has a few other players on his foursome wishlist, too.

“I’d love to play with Rory, just to watch him hit it,” he said. “I’ve walked with him but I’d love to play with him in a tournament. I’d like to play with Tiger when he’s got his game going. And he does, you know, it’s fun to watch. Anytime I’m walking in between these groups with those guys, I just want to stand to the side.”

Angel Reese describes playing with Caitlin Clark for first time

For a few years now, we have seen Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese compete against one another. Whether at the college level with Iowa and LSU or making the jump to the WNBA, the two stars have had competitive battles between them.

Now, at the WNBA All-Star Game in Phoenix, Clark and Reese are teammates. The WNBA All-Stars are going up against the USA Olympic team ahead of the 2024 Olympics in Paris, bringing some of women’s basketball’s best players together.

Reese was asked about her first-ever experience playing alongside Clark, enjoying the moment. Clark has been a great passer of the ball since entering the WNBA and it’s something Reese has been fond of.

Of course, there is a future for the two playing together. Maybe not at the WNBA level where Indiana and Chicago are happy with two franchise players. But down the road with USA Basketball, both Clark and Reese should be a part of the team, potentially beginning with the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
“It’s so cool, when she gets the ball I’m running looking for the ball because I know she’s gonna throw it,” Reese said during an in-game interview with ESPN. “So, she’s been great to play with. I mean, the future — we’re going to be playing with each other a lot. Hopefully, in 4 years we’ll be Olympians together.”

Team WNBA finds itself down two at halftime after a poor shooting performance. Clark has just four points, missing all five three-point attempts. However, the six assists are eye-popping, being the most of anybody on the court.

Reese got just nine minutes but has four points and five assists on her stat sheet. Churning out double-doubles in the WNBA has been her thing and is a very real possibility Saturday night in the All-Star Game.

With the second half coming up, hopefully another competitive half is upcoming. Team USA will not take their foot off the gas, needing to get in rhythm before heading to Paris. Maybe Team WNBA will be a little more relaxed but there is an opportunity to make an impression on the big stage.

Clark and Reese should be able to get more floor time together as well. Watching the two main Rookie of the Year candidates playing with one another is exactly what an all-star game should be about. The duo seem to be enjoying the moment just like the rest of us.
