Tiger Woods details when he’ll quit golf after retirement rumours emerge

Tiger Woods has no plans to retire from professional golf – despite being forced to withdraw once again at the Genesis Invitational.

Woods made his first appearance of the PGA Tour season as tournament host in Los Angeles, but it was another disappointing week for the 15-time major champion. After a 1-over-par 72, Woods was forced to shorten his week’s six holes to enter the second round.

The 82-time PGA Tour winner was carted off the golf course and had an ambulance waiting in the tournament car park, before he finally opted to leave the site by car.

It was then revealed that Woods was suffering with influenza, with the illness putting a stop to his tournament in the early stages. It continued the American star’s stop-start schedule on the PGA Tour, who has struggled for full fitness since suffering career-threatening injuries in a car accident in February 2021.

Since then Woods has featured just seven times on Tour, having been forced to withdraw on three occasions in that time. Despite the constant setbacks, the golfing great still has no plans to call time on his playing career. “I still love competing, I love playing, I love being a part of the game of golf,” he said pre-tournament last week.

“This is the game of a lifetime and I don’t ever want to stop playing. I love being able to compete, I love being able to enjoy different conversations from across time… I love that and I don’t ever want to lose that.”

Prior to his withdrawal at Riviera, Woods outlined plans to play one a month throughout 2024, starting with the Genesis. The five-time Masters champion made the pledge when appearing at the season-ending Hero World Challenge in 2023, where he completed all four rounds for just the third time in two seasons.

“I think that the best scenario would be maybe a tournament a month. I think that’s realistic,” Woods said in the Bahamas.

“You would have to start with maybe at Genesis and then something in March near the Players. Again, we have it set up right now the biggest events are one per month. It sets itself up for that. Now, I need to get myself ready for all that. I think this week is a big step in that direction.”

As mentioned by the man himself, Woods’ next outing looks set to be the Players Championship in March, however it remains unknown if last week’s illness will play a part in his plans. On the back of the Players, Woods will no doubt then turn his attention to the Masters in April, as he sets his sights on yet another historic victory at Augusta National, five years on from his last.
