Joaquin Niemann faced a great deal of struggle at The 2024 Open Championship last week. Fresh after a tied for 58th place finish, the LIV Golf star is set to tee it up at the Saudi-based league’s next event in the United Kingdom this week prior to the Paris Olympics.
Despite many of the LIV Golf stars being banned from playing on the DP World Tour, the Chilean golfer has played a few events via exemptions. Due to LIV Golf’s 54 hole format, the league is not eligible to award its players points via the Official World Golf Rankings. The system has unfortunately caused the players that made the move from the PGA Tour to LIV Golf to fall down the ranks.

During LIV Golf’s inception in 2022, several DP World Tour players were fined and suspended for playing in the inaugural season. Due to regulations, players who take part in conflicting events are subject to punishment from the tour’s board. When Niemann was asked if he’d be interested in playing on the DP World Tour again, the former PGA Tour player said:
” If I can go and they let me play, I will definitely try to go because I feel like — obviously I would like not to go and just be on LIV and get those spots, but the only reason — if I’m able to go and play on DP World it’s because of the majors and try to get my way in. If I’m free to go and play the DP World I might play because I’m pretty high on the rankings on the DP World. If I’m able, if they let me do it, I’ll try.”
Passionate about winning his maiden major championship title, Joaquin Niemann is willing to do whatever it takes to get there. He aims to gain more Official World Golf Ranking points via the DP World Tour to enter the majors. While Open tournaments have qualifiers, events like the Masters only invite players at the top of the rankings. Niemann currently ranks 13th on the DP World Tour’s Race to Dubai Rankings with 1,170.23 points earned.
