TGL format explained
The TGL will run on a league-based format and will make its debut on January 7 2025. The TGL players have a combined 214 PGA Tour wins, 30 Majors, and 834 weeks at World No. 1.
TGL’s season will have five matches played per team and will run on a point-based system.
TGL is a virtual golf-based tournament league. Players will hit into a 64 foot wide screen called the ‘ScreenZone’ from 35 yards with a golf simulator. The ScreenZone features a tee box with real grass and sand.
The short game and shots less than 50 yards will be played on the ‘GreenZone,’ a tech-green that is roughly 97 yards long with changing slopes and conditions. The green has the ability to rotate and change topography and angles.
The league will feature a referee, time-out for players’ recovery, raised stakes, and all players will have microphones on them to create a unique experience for viewers. A shot clock will also be introduced, giving players 40 seconds to hit their shot. A shot taking more than 40 seconds will result in a one stroke penalty for the team.
TGL is presented by SoFi and features PGA Tour players competing for two hours each week. The league will have two sessions – Triples and Singles. Holes 1 to 9 will be played in the Triples format and holes 10 to 15 will be played in Singles.
Triples will have players compete in a 9 hole three versus three alternate shot play. Singles will have 6 holes with two players competing against each other. Each hole will be worth one point. In the result of a tie, the tournament will go into overtime with a closest to the pin competition.
Post season, the top four teams will head into a single-elimination-style playoff. The two winners from the playoff will face each other in a best of three Championship.
