Alan Hansen is seen for first time since his shock illness

Alan Hansen has given fans a boost after he was spotted flashing a smile while playing golf following his shock stint in illness.

The 69-year-old Liverpool legend was rushed to hospital in June after falling seriously ill, with fans from around the world sending their love to the former Match of the Day star.

Now, new pictures have shown the former footballer enjoying a round of golf at a course near his home in Southport on Merseyside on Wednesday.

The images, which will come as a clear boost for his supporters, show a cheerful Hansen flashing a smile, with his golf bag slung over his shoulder.

Dressed in a NetJets golf cap, blue fleece and green trousers, he appeared relaxed as he made his way around the course – with other snaps showing the recovering Scotland hero deep in concentration as he teed off.
One onlooker told the Mirror: ‘He looked great, and was clearly enjoying himself. He was full of smiles.’

It is the first time the 69-year-old has been seen for the first time since he was admitted to hospital last month with a serious illness.

Liverpool announced on June 9 that Alan had been admitted to hospital with a serious illness, without going into any further details.

A few weeks later the club announced he had been discharged: ‘Alan has been discharged from hospital today to continue his recovery at home.

‘Alan, Janet, Adam, Lucy and family would like to thank everybody for their wonderful messages of love and support.

‘It has been overwhelming and has helped enormously. We also hugely appreciate the ongoing respect that has been shown for our privacy as Alan continues his recovery.’

Hansen played for Liverpool between 1977 and 1991 and made 620 appearances for the club, while he won an array of trophies.

The former Scotland international was a pundit on Match of the Day from 1992 to 2014 during which time he presented the show with its current host Gary Lineker.

Lineker recently revealed that he received a phone call before Alan was discharge3d from hospital saying that it was going to be announced that he had died.

Lineker disclosed that shortly afterwards he was informed that the information regarding Hansen wasn’t correct.

Speaking on the Rest Is Football podcast, Lineker said: ‘I got a text message yesterday from Janet Hansen, Alan’s wife, saying that he’d been discharged from hospital, that he’d gone home.

‘I also saw that Liverpool had put out a tweet saying exactly the same thing. What an amazing piece of news.’

Alan Shearer, who also worked alongside Hansen, said that it is ‘great news’ that Hansen has been discharged from hospital.

Shearer said: ‘That was great wasn’t it. You told us at breakfast that you had a text message, so that was a great start to the day.

‘As usual Mr. Hansen’s timing was impeccable so he could get home and watch his team, but unfortunately they didn’t produce the goods for him, but great news that he’s on the mend and he’s back home.’

Commenting on the phone call that he received, Lineker said: ‘I’m not going to share who this was but I got a call two weeks ago during the period when we knew Alan was really struggling from somebody asking me to come on and talk about the fact that it was about to be announced that Alan’s left us.

‘Genuinely, I broke down and then then an hour later people say, no, hang on a minute hang on a minute that’s not quite the case, but he’s pulled through and it’s fantastic news.

‘So hope you’re listening Al. Yeah, well done. Well done mate. It’s great to have you back with us.’

Tiger Woods’ son Charlie struggles during opening round of US Junior Amateur Open as 15-year-old shoots plus-12 under his father’s watchful eye

Tiger Woods’ 15-year-old son Charlie had an off day at the opening round of the US Junior Amateur Open at Oakland Hills on Monday.

The younger Woods was plus-12 as he birdied both of the par 5s on the Oakland Hills North Course but struggled on the par 3s and 4s, carding five double bogeys and four bogeys.

Woods will have to have quite a turnaround Tuesday on the South Course, which Ben Hogan called ‘The Monster,’ to be among the low 64 scorers from a field that started with 264 players from 40 states and 35 countries.
At an event that usually draws a few hundred people for the championship match, about 100 people were waiting on the first tee to see Woods play and at least that many spectators followed him throughout his round.

Woods, who is from Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, was visibly frustrated with his round and his famous father was relatively helpless because rules prevent parents from coaching their children during the tournament.

Charlie Woods covered his face with his cap after shaking hands with his playing partners on the 18th green and went on to sign a card from a round he may want to forget.

He earned a spot in the field last month with a 1-under 71 as the medalist from his qualifier at Eagle Trace Golf Club in Coral Springs, Florida.

Tiger Woods was 14 when he qualified for his first U.S. Junior and reached the semifinals. Woods won his first U.S. Junior a year later and went on to become the only one to win the tournament three times in a row.

He traveled to suburban Detroit from Scotland after matching his highest 36-hole score as a professional at the British Open, missing the cut for the third straight time in a major.

The elder Woods tied a personal record in the British Open on Friday, albeit one he could have done without.

Woods matched his highest 36-hole score as a professional – 156 – to miss the cut for the third straight time in a major.

He tapped in for a routine par on the 18th hole at Royal Troon and signed for a 6-over 77, a round that got away from him early with a double bogey and never improved during the day.

‘It wasn’t very good,’ Woods said. ‘I made a double right out of the hopper when I needed to go the other way. Just was fighting it pretty much all day. I never really hit it close enough to make birdies and consequently made a lot of bogeys.’

That brought a short season to an abrupt end.

Woods said he won’t play again until December, possibly his unofficial Hero World Challenge with a 20-man field in the Bahamas.
