Drama at LIV Golf Andalucia as Crushers GC and Lahiri forced to settle for runner-up spots
On a day of huge drama Sergio Garcia and his Fireballs GC team prevailed in a double play-off, to win the 54-hole $25 million LIV Golf Andalucia at Real Club Valderrama, Spain.
Going into the final day’s play Anirban Lahiri and his Crushers GC team looked poised to win over the challenging tree-lined golf course. But things panned out differently.
Lahiri started the final round with a four-shot lead and looked to be taking the top prize with a brilliant birdie four on hole 17. He stood on the 18th tee with a one-shot lead in the shotgun start – needing a par four on the toughest hole on the golf course all week. Lahiri found the middle of the green with his approach shot and rolled his birdie attempt to three feet to set up the potential winning par.
But with a chance to win the individual title and secure the team title for the Crushers, he missed the putt for a final-round 73 to drop back to 5 under and set up the double playoff.
Garcia won the individual title on the second playoff hole – again on hole 18 with a par. It was heartbreak for the Crushers, who have won twice this season and lead the season-long points standings as they look to repeat as Team Champions.
“It sucks. Losing is never fun,” said DeChambeau. “That’s what makes winning so much better. I feel for Baan (Lahiri).’ Abraham Ancer and David Puig beat the Crushers duo of captain Bryson DeChambeau and Paul Casey in the team aggregate-score playoff as the Fireballs – with three Spaniards on the roster.
“To be totally honest, there’s a connection between Valderrama and myself that I can’t even explain it,” said the 44-year-old Garcia, who ended a four-year winless drought while winning his 37th professional title.
Valderrama once again provided the stiffest test of the LIV Golf season so far with only nine players breaking par over the 54 holes.
The Crushers continue to dominate the Team Standings with Legion XIII and Torque CG in second and third place respectively. In the Individual Standings Garcia moves up to third and Lahiri up to 16th.
They are led by Joaquin Niemann (Torque), followed by Jon Rahm (Legion XIII), who is still looking for his first individual victory.
The next LIV Golf event is at JCB Golf and Country Club in the United Kingdom, 26th – 28th July 2024.

Kate Ferdinand has shared a snippet into husband Rio’s sweet reunion with their children, after he was away for four weeks covering the 2024 Euros in Germany.
The TOWIE star, 33, shared an adorable snap of the former footballer, 45, hugging their son Cree after arriving back home on Monday.
The pundit can be seen still clad in his travelling clothes with his suitcase next to him, while his three-year-old leapt into his arms in excitement.
Captioning the heartwarming shot, Kate wrote: ‘Ok, it’s not coming home. BUT daddy is, 4 weeks away and he’s back with us’.
It comes after she took to her Instagram on Sunday to share a snap of herself at the Olympiastadion Berlin to watch the final between England and Spain.
Looking effortlessly stunning in a black cropped jacket and jeans, Kate flashed a glimpse of her toned abs in a white crop top.
Sharing her hopes for an England victory at long last, she wrote in the caption: ‘It’s coming home’.
But sadly the Three Lions fail to make history as they lost 2-1 to Spain, losing out on a Euros trophy for the second time in a row.
Kate also posted a photo of her and stepdaughter Tia, 13, heading to the stadium for the game, revealing they had gone together for a ‘girls trip’.
She wrote: ‘We took a girls trip to Germany. First time for me & Tia, we had so much fun’ before adding: ‘I can’t believe she taller than me now’.
Kate and Rio – who tied the knot in September 2019 – share son Cree and daughter Shae, who celebrated her first birthday this month.
While Kate is step-mum to Rio’s children Lorenz, 18, Tate, 15, and Tia, from his first wife Rebecca Ellison, who tragically passed away in 2015 after a short battle with breast cancer.
It comes after millions of fans packed into bars and pubs on Sunday night in the hopes of seeing England finally claim their first victory since the World Cup of 1966.
Super sub Cole Palmer had given the nation belief again after he struck a brilliant equaliser in the 73rd-minute, after going behind at the start of the second half.
It sent bars and pubs into wild celebrations, with beers launched into the air as fans sung ‘it’s coming home’.
But the hopes and expectations of a nation came crashing down after Spain’s Mikel Oyarzabal slotted the winning goal past Jordan Pickford in the 86th minutes.
Crestfallen fans were left in disbelief and holding their heads in their hands after Gareth Southgate’s men came agonisingly close into pushing the game into extra time.
In Berlin, Prince William and Prince George were visibly stunned as they watched from the stadium. While King Charles urged the squad to ‘hold your heads high’.
The defeat echoed England’s bitter loss at Euro 2020, when the squad came in as runners-up yet again to Italy.
But in a touching message, the Prince of Wales told the team ‘we’re all still so proud of you’ after the heartbreaking loss.
Prince William, who is the president of the FA and later presented runner-up medals to the Three Lions, said: ‘It just wasn’t meant to be.’
