“He could set a new record”: Golf fans fawn over Davis Thompson, sitting in John Deere Classic’s limelight
Davis Thompson is leading the John Deere Classic with a 28 under through 16th. Thompson is on pace to set new ‘aggregate’ and ‘to par’ records for the event.
The current record is 27 under 257 set in 2018 by Michael Kim. Fans have begun to react to Davis Thompson’s performance, some congratulating him on an outstanding event.
However, other fans are not happy with the quality shown by the John Deere Classic field and have also made this known by reacting to Davis Thompson’s score.
One fan posted the following on X (formerly Twitter):
“If he keeps this up, he could set a new record”
Another fan said the following:
“Great for Davis. But this is the most boring round of golf to watch.”

“28 under is a sign we need harder courses,” another user wrote.
“I know it’s a big deal winning, but he could at least look like he’s enjoying it,” another fan said.
Davis Thompson had eight birdies and one bogey during the fourth round of the John Deere Classic. The previous day, he had a remarkably low score (9 under 62).
A look at Davis Thompson’s performance at the 2024 John Deere Classic
Davis Thompson started the 2024 John Deere Classic with a bogey-free round in which he made eight birdies. With this performance, he took a spot among the top contenders for the title.
The second day was also good for Thompson, with an eagle, five birdies and a bogey (67). With this performance, he brought his score to 12 under after 36 holes.
The third round was Thompson’s best so far. He again played bogey-free, with nine birdies, to bring his score to 21 under and take first place in the tournament.
Should he win the John Deere Classic, it would be the first victory for Thompson in his PGA Tour career. He has played 63 events at this level, although he has held his membership card since 2023.
During the current season, Thompson has played 19 tournaments on the premier U.S. Tour, with 14 cuts passed. He has finished in three Top 10s, including two second-place finishes. Those came at the Myrtle Beach Classic and the Rocket Mortgage Classic the previous week.
Thompson is ranked 51st in the FedEx Cup and 70th in the world rankings. With this victory, he will earn a spot in the final major of the season, The Open Championship.
A victory at the John Deere Classic will also give Thompson his PGA Tour card through the end of the 2026 season.

Excellent performance by Stefano Mazzoli, who ranked fifth with 281 (73 69 67 72, -11) shots, in the International Series Morocco played on the course of the Royal Golf Dar Es Salam (Red Course, par 73), in Rabat, Morocco , where Ben Campbell won (277 – 68 70 68 71, -15).
The New Zealander reached the American John Catlin (277 – 66 71 68 72) at the last minute with the eagle-birdie sequence on the last two holes and then overtook him in the first overtime.
Asian Tour, results
In third place in the International Series Morocco 2024 for Asian Tour with 280 (-12) the other American Caleb Surratt and the Spaniard Eugenio Chacarra, player of LIV Golf, who succumbed at the end after being co-leader with Catlin, and together with Mazzoli the Australian Travis Smyth.
In seventh position with 282 (-10) the Japanese Jinichiro Kozuma and in eighth with 283 (-9) the Koreans Junghwan Lee and Jeunghun Wang, the Indian Rayhan Thomas, the Filipino Miguel Tabuena and the American Pat Perez, another member of the Super League Arab.
Ben Campbell, a 32-year-old from Masterton, took his second title on the circuit, after the first in the Hong Kong Open last November. His list of successes also includes a success on the PGA Tour of Australasia and on the Charles Tour.
In the final round he overcame the deficit he suffered from Catlin after 54 holes with a partial score of 71 (-2) resulting from an eagle, three birdies and three bogey. For him a check for 360,000 dollars on a prize pool of 2,000,000 dollars.
Mazzoli, after starting in 64th place, moved up to fifth in the third round, passing through 15th, and in the fourth he made up for a false start (three bogeys and only one birdie on the first nine holes) with three birdies in the final , for 72 (-1) which allowed him to maintain his position and sign the best result of the season in the six events he took part in on the tour, for which he has the ‘card’ obtained at the Qualifying School.
The rules of golf are relatively complicated compared to other sports because they are applied outdoors, close to nature and animals.
