“Incompatible with their positions” Rory McIlroy’s potential return to the PGA Tour Policy Board irks other members

Rory McIlroy resigned from his position on the PGA Tour Policy Board in November 2023 due to personal and professional reasons. McIlroy is reportedly returning to his position on the board after five months.

Negotiations between the Public Investment Fund and the PGA Tour are underway and they are yet to formally meet to finalize the merger framework agreement. The PIF reportedly specifically asked for Rory McIlroy on the board, which would result in Webb Simpson giving up his seat for McIlroy.

Zurich Classic of New Orleans - Round Two

According to Golfweek, Eamon Lynch says many PGA Tour players are allegedly not thrilled with McIlroy’s return to the board. Lynch said:

“A small faction on the board sees McIlroy as allied with those who engineered the Framework Agreement last June, and also view his publicly stated position — that a Saudi compromise is both essential and urgent — as incompatible with their positions, the particulars of which they haven’t yet revealed for the record.”
Jordan Spieth took McIlroy’s position on the Policy Board following his resignation in 2023. McIlroy reportedly did not agree with Spieth’s stance on the potential merger between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf’s principal investor, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF).

Spieth reportedly believed that the PGA Tour did not need a deal with the PIF and that the $1.5 billion given to the Tour by Strategic Sports Group would be enough of an investment. McIlroy allegedly disagrees and believes that the Tour requires aid from the PIF to grow the game.

When asked about his return to the board during a press conference ahead of the 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans, McIlroy said:

“I think I can be helpful. I don’t think there’s been much progress made in the last eight months and I was hopeful that there would be. I think I could be helpful to the process. But only if people want me involved, I guess.”

Rory McIlroy’s stance on the PGA Tour Policy Board

Rory McIlroy recently stated that he had spoken to Webb Simpson who would be stepping down if McIlroy were to join the board.

McIlroy said in a press conference ahead of the 2024 Zurich Classic:

“When Webb [Simpson] and I talked, and he talked about potentially coming off the board, I said: ‘Look, if it was something that other people wanted, I would gladly take that seat’…I feel like I care a lot and I have some pretty good experience and good connections within the game and sort of around the wider sort of ecosystem and everything that’s going on.”

When asked about how he felt regarding his divide with other PGA Tour players and their opinions on the PIF and LIV Golf, he said a “compromise” must be made to grow the game. McIlroy said:

“Compromise, but also try to articulate your points as well as you can, and try to help people see the benefits of what unification could do for the game and what it could do for this tour in particular. We obviously realise the game is not unified right now for a reason and there’s still some hard feelings and things that need to be addressed, but I think at this point, for the good of the game, we all need to put those feelings aside and all move forward together.”
