LIV Golf Suspends Graeme McDowell for Banned Substance in Medicine

Graeme McDowell, the 2010 U.S. Open champion who plays for LIV Golf, has been suspended for this week’s event in Greenbrier and fined $125,000 because he violated the league’s anti-doping policy.

The violation occurred during the league’s Nashville event in June and LIV Golf announced that the golfer had taken a decongestant medicine which included a banned substance called R-methamphetamine.

LIV’s policy calls for a one-tournament suspension, with his individual and Smash GC team results for Nashville being disqualified. McDowell finished tied for 42rd in that event and Smash finished 12th out of 13 teams.

Smash is captained by Brooks Koepka and McDowell’s spot will be filled this week by a player to be determined. McDowell will be eligible to return to LIV Golf in time for its Chicago event, Sept. 13-15.
McDowell is 23rd in LIV’s season-long standings and has three top-10 finishes, his best a tie for fifth in Las Vegas. He tied for 29th two weeks ago at the tournament in England.

A winless 2024 season might not be for Cameron Smith! In the last four years, the pro from Down Under has won at least one tournament in a season, whether it be the major in 2022 or winning on the PGA Tour or on LIV Golf. Despite a solid track record, his success was interrupted in the 2024 season. However, at the Old White Course, Smith can reclaim his form and potentially win the LIV Golf Greenbrier. But the journey has been anything but easy. He was asked about the same at the press conference after the second round’s conclusion. Smith, dejected by his season-long winless result, said, “Winning is a very hard thing.” He further explained that sometimes things do not go his way, even after playing well. Just missing a putt here and there can cause the game to spiral out of his control. This in turn makes him question his entire week’s performance, as despite his best efforts, he ends up returning home without the silverware in his hand. And with the season-ending soon, Smith’s patience is running low. He expressed, “I’ve been patient in the past and kind of waited for my turn. But it’s hard to be patient, especially at this time of the year.” However, he was hopeful for what was to come next in Chicago and later in Australia. Talking about the Individual LIV Golf Championship in Chicago and another event in his home country, Smith added, “We’ll wait and see. Hopefully, I can get it done tomorrow. If not, we’ll have another shot in Chicago and then down in Australia. I’m trying to stay positive.”
Although the Aussie Pro’s 2024 card shows no victory, it cannot be said that he had a disappointing year. Because even without a win, Smith had come close to it three times on LIV Golf and missed it by just a few shots.
How has Cameron Smith fared in 2024?
In the 2024 season, Cameron Smith posted a mixed scorecard on the breakaway and the four majors of the year. He finished at T6 at Augusta National, his lone top 10 in the majors, and missed the cut at the Open, where he won in 2022. He was T63 at the PGA Championship and T32 at the U.S. Open. While the 31-year-old wasn’t near the winning circles in the majors, he was relatively doing much better in the Saudi-backed league. The 3-time LIV Golf winner was a runner-up three times at LIV Golf events in Hong Kong, Singapore, and last week, when Jon Rahm got his maiden LIV win. In the Asian stop, Smith lost in a playoff against Abraham Ancer, while in the next two, he was only one or two strokes from getting a win. Thus, it made him say, “I feel like I’ve done enough work and I’ve played enough good golf to maybe get one.” With a solid scorecard that couldn’t guarantee him a victory, Smith looked over the failures and claimed, “There’s still plenty of positives there.” With hope by his side and a strong form back at LIV Golf Greenbrier, Cameron Smith might have a fourth LIV trophy in his collection and end the season on a better note.
