TUKO.co.ke journalist Japhet Ruto has over eight years of experience in financial, business, and technology reporting and offers profound insights into Kenyan and global economic trends.
Rigathi Gachagua is Kenya’s deputy president who was elected into office in the 2022 General Election to deputise William Ruto.
Before entering politics, the outspoken politician started his career as a district officer (D) before rising to become retired president Uhuru Kenyatta’s personal assistant (PA) and Mathira Member of Parliament (MP).
During the 2022 deputy presidential debate, Gachagua revealed he was worth KSh 800 million.
“I worked in the Ministry of Lands, got KSh 64 million. I got KSh 10 million from Kenya Power, KSh 33 million during my time in the Ministry of Livestock, and another KSh 46 million I worked in an organisation called Batek…I am worth KSh 800 million,” he disclosed.
After assuming office two years ago, Gachagua has been active in the corporate world, expanding his family’s business empire.
How many children does Gachagua have?
According to the DP, the family is the basic unit of society and the nation.
Gachagua disclosed that he is married to one woman and has two children.
He was blessed with two boys during his over 35-year marriage to Dorcas Wanjiku Rigathi.
Which hotels do Gachagua’s family own?
1. Treetops Hotel
According to Daily Nation, Gachagua’s son, Keith, acquired the iconic Treetops Hotel, which reopened in 2022, charting a new era for the hospitality sector.
The Treetops Hotel, famed for witnessing Queen Elizabeth’s ascension to the throne 72 years ago, is a significant relic of the Mau Mau movement in Nyeri.
Keith explained that the establishment holds a significant part of Kenya’s history, including its liberation struggle, that has remained untold.
“For instance, very few people know that beneath the hotel lie underground tunnels constructed by the Mau Mau fighters for accessing the facility,” he expounded.
Located roughly 10 kilometres from the hotel, within the Aberdare Forest, is a fig tree that served as a post office for the Mau Mau movement.
Gachagua (Riggy G) said the decision to buy the historic hotel stemmed from a challenge he shared with the local business people.
2. Outspan Hotel
Eric Sherbrooke Walker founded Outsoan Hotel in the 1920s in Nyeri.
Situated atop a river canyon in the Aberdare Range, the hotel was constructed on around 69 acres of land that Walker acquired in 1928.
It is famous for being home to the Paxtu cottage, a scouting museum used as Baden-Powell’s commissioned residence in the late 1930s.
Gachagua confirmed acquiring the hotel on April 4, 2022, at the Nyeri National Polytechnic’s fourth graduation ceremony.
3. Olive Gardens Hotel
Who Owns Kenya reported that Olive Gardens Hotel is another facility owned by Gachagua’s family.
Olive Gardens Hotel in Nairobi is a three-star hotel roughly 3.8 km from the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).
The hotel has 60 rooms with complimentary Wi-Fi, private bathrooms, and flat-screen TVs.
It features a restaurant providing African food, a garden, and a free private parking area.
4. Vipingo Beach Resort
Kilifi, Kenya’s breathtaking shoreline, hosts the opulent Vipingo Beach Resort, which is 20 kilometres away from Watamu National Marine Park.
It features a restaurant, a garden, a patio, and complimentary private parking.
The resort has an infinity pool where guests can unwind elegantly and enjoy the stunning surroundings.
Which other businesses are owned by the Gachaguas?
The following companies did business with the national and county governments:
Encater Diagnostics Ltd
The company deals with medical supplies. It reportedly received KSh 123,175,000 after winning tenders in respective county governments.
Technical Supplies and Services (K)
The building company got KSh 220,877,180.85 from the national government.
Skytop Agencies
Skytop Agencies received KSh 20.6 million from the national government and another KSh 2.05 million from counties.
Other firms are Machine Centre Ltd, Riang International Group Ltd, Jenne Enterprises and Rapid Group.
Who are the richest people from Mombasa?
In other news, Mombasa city is home to affluent Kenyan businessmen with substantial holdings in manufacturing, real estate, and logistics.
Among them is Hassan Joho, the Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs.
Joho revealed he’s worth KSh 2.3 billion.
